"Walking for Victor's Sight"
by Shirley Brown
On Saturday, October 21, 2000,
22 walkers associated with Folsom Feline Rescue (FFR) gathered in
old town Folsom for CatWalk 2000. The purpose of the 5-Kilometer CatWalk
2000 was to raise funds for Victor, a sweet Russian Blue kitten. Victor
was rescued from a Sacramento downtown location, and it was determined
that he was going blind. The only option for restoring Victor's sight was
cataract surgery. The Folsom Feline Rescue volunteers rallied together to
raise funds for Victor's eye surgery by selling candy, tee-shirts, and
ornaments, but it wasn't until the successful CatWalk 2000 that the total
amount necessary was raised.
The CatWalk was the idea of one enterprising FFR
Board Member, Tracy Kirsten. Tracy began discussing her idea with other
volunteers and soon they were organizing walkers and gathering pledges for
the event. On the day of the walk, there were 22 adult walkers and 2
canines, Raven and Nevada. There were also 2 children who
participated--Dominic Lucas, age 7 and Riley Meyer, age 2. Riley, in his
stroller, was pushed alternately by his Mom, Kelley, and then his Dad,
Louis. John and Janet Bennett, cofounders of FFR, thanked all the walkers
and the organizers at the lunch at Remo's Pizza after the event. John
stated that after Victor's surgery and recovery, he will be adopted out to
a suitable family.
