and our 2 year anniversary party

"A volunteers perspective"

Group shot of all the cat walkersFolsom Feline Rescue's CatWalk 2002, held on June 30, 2002, brought out dedicated FFR volunteers and friends on a warm Sunday morning for a fun, sociable walk through historic old-town Folsom.

A total of 27 adults and 3 children joined in the walk that day, including one family (Lori Hansen and group) who drove up from Davis after hearing about the walk from friends who do bird rescue.
The walk starts
The walk wasn't just "all business." Some of our walkers had to dodge and duck from the "super soaker" water-gun attacks of Jeff Kirsten! Even the two pregnant ladies, Tracy Kirsten and Shayna Whitehouse, both expecting boys in October, were not immune from Jeff's "super soaker" barrage! The ladies didn't seem to mind; Tracy said that it was actually refreshing.

In addition to the human walkers/supporters, we had 4 dogs participating- - a corgi, a jack russell terrier, a border collie and a yorkshire terrier (carried in a babypack). Raven, the border collie, was a repeat walker, having participated in CatWalk 2000.

A visiting kitten comes by to say helloWith all the fun and frivolity, the event did have a serious side. The purpose of the fund raising was to generate funds to expand "SNYP." "SNYP" stands for Spay/Neuter Your Pet and allows FFR to help low-income residents of the area "fix" their animals. So far, over 100 cats and dogs of low-income residents of Folsom, Fair Oaks, and Orangevale have been "fixed." With the additional $1500 raised from CatWalk 2002, FFR will be able to extend the program to Citrus Heights and, thereby, help prevent pet overpopulation there as well.

Funds are still being collected for "SNYP" and checks can be mailed to FFR at the following address:

A receipt for tax purposes will be provided, if requested, as FFR is a 100% volunteer, non-profit, charitable, tax-exempt corporation.

Following the walk, the participants all met at Remo's Pizza on Sutter Street in Folsom for the Anniversary Party. This year marked the second year of existence for FFR and the Pizza Parlor opened specifically so that our group could celebrate. We enjoyed pizza and camaraderie as we reminisced about the events over the past 2 years and the felines that were helped. John and Janet Bennett, Co-Founders of FFR, spoke on the achievements, the goals, and the continuing progress of the group. Both John and Janet thanked the volunteers and expressed appreciation for the efforts of the volunteers in feline rescue. Janet said, "Folsom Feline Rescue volunteers are THE BEST!"

Controlling pet overpopulation is a major goal of Folsom Feline Rescue. Thousands of unwanted cats and dogs are euthanized each year in Sacramento County alone. Each animal that we can spay or neuter prevents potential offspring (usually 4 to 6 puppies or kittens per season) from growing up and having yet more offspring of their own. Together as a community we can break the cycle of misery caused by pet overpopulation. Visit our SNYP page for more information on our Spay / Neuter Your Pet Program or our trapping page for feral cats.
