His foster caretaker, Janet Bennett, fondly describes him as a gentle lap cat who loves to be petted. He lays in his cat bed on top of a file cabinet at perfect eye level with the window, watching the world outside. She says, "He's very smart - - he can see our reflection in the window so he knows when we come into the room! When he sees us or feels us pet him, he meows loudly (after all, he can't hear himself)!"

Janet named him after Walter Matthau because of his shuffling "old man" gait.

She states, "He purrs the moment he is touched. When I pet him, I try to talk to him against his head or neck so that he can feel my voice vibrating. Although he is leading a quiet life, I know he is better off now than when he was homeless, roaming the streets."

Whenever he wants lap time, he walks across the desk and nudges the person sitting there. Then he will either amble his way onto the comfy lap or wait to be put there. He spends a lot of quality time napping.

While Walter waits for the right person to adopt him, he is enjoying his life in the "slow lane."

sions free from scratch marks. You can get them from your veterinarian, order online (http://softpaws.com/), by phone (1-800-989-2542), or by mail. A kit costs only $14.95. Applying the caps is a simple process. First, you have to trim the cat's nails. Second, put some of the adhesive on the caps. Then, slide the cap over the nail. Soft Pawsâ should only be used on indoor cats.

While declawing your cat is considered inhumane, many argue that, as a last resort, it is better than putting your cat to sleep or making it live outdoors (living outside cuts about eight years off of a cat's predicted life span). It is important, though, that before even thinking of declawing your cat, you should try all possible alternatives.
