The Best of Friends?  You Bet!

By Julie Carruth

One question we often get asked at adoption events is, "How can I introduce a cat to my dog?"  As the happy owner of four cats and two dogs, I've had a lot of experience in this area.  Our two Border Collies reside harmoniously with our cats, even though the dogs occasionally want to use their skills and herd them like sheep into the other room.  Here are some tips to help make those first few days of co-existing go smoothly:

1) Before you adopt, find out as much as you can about your new cat.  Has it been fostered in a family with dogs?  If so, it's likely your new cat will be comfortable around dogs.  We let people know if a cat or kitten is especially afraid of dogs, so you can adopt the best fit for your household.  By taking some time to find out about your new pet, you

can avoid problems later on.

2) Take things slowly!  Your new cat or kitten has a lot to adjust to in your new home.  Start them out in a small room, such as a laundry room, bathroom, or guest room.  Let your new feline get used to his/her surroundings

Petco Kitten Captured

After a week-long struggle to catch a wary kitten in the Fair Oaks Petco store he was finally captured sometime during the night of Thursday, January 8th.  Folsom Feline President, John Bennett, stated, "This is a happy outcome to what was becoming a serious issue."  It was a week ago Saturday that the wily kitten, named Soda, a Russian Blue Mix, accidentally got loose in the pet store.  Teams of volunteers spent hours trying to coax the kitten from behind shelves of pet food without success.  All resources were used to try and capture the kitten.  It was after setting humane cat traps that the kitten was finally caught on Thursday night.  Bennett said, "I was starting to think we would have to adopt the cat to the store!"  Soda is being picked up today to go back into foster care and recover from his traumatic experience.  He is expected to be up for adoption in the near future.
