Name:
Nancy Nitrio
Occupation:
Wife to Bob, Mom to Jennifer and new son-in-law, Khalid, and "Mommy" to my Kitty Litter Gang. Wow! What a job!
Birthplace:
San Francisco, CA
About my family:
I have been married to my High School Sweetheart for almost 38 years! We lived the early part of our marriage in the Bay Area, then moved to Richland, Washington where our only child, Jennifer, was born. I was lucky to be able to be a stay-at-home mom and enjoyed that experience immensely. We moved back to the Orangevale area in the 1980s and have really enjoyed life in the Sacramento area. I now have a wonderful new son-in-law, Khalid, so my family has expanded.
Companion animals I share my home with:
I was babysitting Nyaux the cat for my daughter, Jennifer, and well, I couldn't let her go, so she has been with me for about 7 years. Next is Fiona. Again I was fostering her for Jennifer and guess what? She's mine. The next is SweetPea and you guessed right! -- from Jennifer again. But SweetPea is really Bob's cat. She prefers his lap and attention to mine. Next is Buttercup who just showed up at our back door! She prefers to stay in our patio and only comes in at night when it is really cold. She just loves to sit on Mommy's chest and clean my face and hair at night. Now for O.J. He was our neighborhood feral who would come and feed outside now and then. One day, after missing awhile, he showed up weak and starving. The vet felt he was trapped somewhere with no food. I nursed him back to health and he is a cuddle bug. Last is Gabby, another "foster" from Jennifer. (Are we seeing a pattern here?) Almost forgot Julius the "feral" one. I trapped him last summer and he disappeared for awhile after that. Now he is back eating at the back door but runs whenever he sees us. I think he will take a lot of time and patience!

Why I decided to volunteer with FFR:

What I like best about volunteering with FFR:
I get to make a difference in the lives of so many cats and dogs and their owners and caretakers.
A favorite story about my volunteer experience:
I had a call from a young lady who wondered why her boyfriend had my telephone number. I tried to explain that I was from FFR and her boyfriend was calling me back with his address. I reassured her that I was old enough to be her mother and that calmed her down a bit! Of course my husband was listening and could hardly contain himself as I was going through all these explanations and assurances.
Advice I have for other people wanting to volunteer:
Volunteering with FFR, or any other type of organization, can bring such satisfaction with the knowledge that you do make a difference in someone's life, be it animal or human. I get touched each time I hear “thank you" for all the help that FFR does.
