PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

In the rescue business, we often see more than our share of animal deaths. Some are due to untreatable disease (thus requiring euthanasia) while others occur so suddenly it leaves us wondering what went wrong. Recently one of my own pets close to my heart was discovered with a large tumor and had to be euthanized. For us humans, pet lives are all too short, and we are likely to outlive a number of our companions -- but there may be a time when this is not the case.

Who will care for your pets when you are gone? I have received a number of calls in the past from family members looking for help with placing a pet whose owner had passed away. No one ever considered the issue until it was too late. As you look over your finances for the upcoming tax season, review your estate plans as well. Make sure you have a plan in place to cover your pets if you are unable to. Over two-thirds of pet owners treat their animals as members of their families, and as such, they should be added to a will, trust, or other means of protection.
