(Continued from page 2)
We tried placing BooBoo and Yogi, we even tried advertising them as barn cats, but it was pretty hopeless. They were only friendly with us and no one else. And even so, they didn't like being picked up and were easily startled. It came to us making a decision and our decision was to adopt them ourselves.
Last year, BooBoo stopped eating and taking care of himself. We took him to the vet and found that he had a "fatty liver" that was causing him to have no appetite. He was force fed, but the food didn't stay down. Eventually, the vet had to attach a small tube directly to Boo's stomach and we had to feed the tube with a special diet every four hours, using a syringe. Poor Boo was miserable. We didn't know if he was going to make it; once his tube came out and we had to rush him to emergency. It took about two weeks and then one day we discovered that Boo had actually eaten some dry food! This was great news because it meant that his appetite was back and he was going to be okay.
After the nursing that we gave to Boo, he was a changed cat. He had bonded with us over those two weeks and was much more affectionate and trusting. BooBoo and Yogi haven't stopped surprising us with the small improvements they make. BooBoo now comes out when company is over and demands attention. They both jump on our bed every morning and meow. They have just as much love to give and need affection like any other cat.
We no longer consider them to be feral; they are part of our family. Thank goodness we didn't give up on them. They've showed us what wonderful companions they are. It's taken a tremendous amount of courage on their parts to trust and open up to us and we're grateful to have them in our lives.
