LapCats Visit with Seniors

By Libby Shipman

Residents of the Assisted Care Living Home enjoyed a warm spring morning with warm, furry friends when Folsom Feline Rescue held their LapCats event on Saturday, March 15th.

"The cats are beautiful!" said Louise, a resident, as a kitty named Sonny made herself at home on her new friend's lap. Other cats, Phoebe, Harry, and Paco found laps to settle into, while Cheez-It entertained residents with his restless antics.

The residents shared memories of past pets with the volunteers. Although they are allowed to have animals in their rooms, many can no longer care for a pet.

"A lot of people miss their pets, and this is a good way for them to feel connected again," said student volunteer Brennyn Torres.
"It's so nice to be around these wonderful animals," said one resident.

Obviously, the cats enjoyed their new friends as well, with many choosing to nap along with a few of the residents.

Some cats, like Sonny, who belong to volunteers, are regulars at LapCats events. Others are in the care of Folsom Feline Rescue until they are adopted. Adoption events are held Saturdays, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., except the last Satur

day of the month at Petco in Fair Oaks, and Sundays, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., except the last Sunday of the month at Petco in Folsom.

Folsom Feline Rescue is a non-profit group staffed by volunteers and dedicated to feline rescue. Their goals include rescue of abandoned and unwanted cats, finding appropriate homes, educating the public, and controlling overpopulation. They have many cats available for adoption to good homes. 8:16pm:  We drive up to the dumpsters.  We see a cat standing outside one of the traps but the trap is already triggered.  Soooo…either there's a really tiny cat in there or it's empty.  It's the latter.  Drats!  Foiled again!  We walk around to the other trap.  Yes, we've caught one!  We shine the light on its ears.  No clipped ears!  We scored again!  Miss Candy Sweetpaws is off the streets.  The boys won't be bothering her again.

8:21pm:  Trapper John asks, "Hey, do you want to set the trap again and see if that cat comes back?"  I say, "Sure, why not?"  I'm feeling pretty righteous by now, seeing how we're cleaning up the streets and all.  So I reset the trap, we park at a distance, and wait.  And wait.  We take out the night vision goggles and survey the area.  No cats in sight.

8:28pm:  "Ah well," Trapper John sighs, "We caught two cats, that's a good night's work."  So we drive up to the dumpsters to pick up the trap and now Dumpster Debbie decides to pop her head out and scamper off.

Would I ever go trapping again?  You bet!  Every cat we catch helps to improve the neighborhood and the reform rate for prisoners is 100%.  Where else do you have that kind of return?

I think a couple more outings and Trapper John may make me an honorable deputy.  Think "Andy Griffith and Barney Fife" here.
