"Sea Lion" Rescue

By Laura Torres

When I told my dad about Folsom Feline Rescue, he heard "Folsom Sea Lion Rescue" couldn't figure out what we would be doing with sea lions at an assisted living facility.  He was finally set straight and I had to promise I would not use his name in this article.

On Saturday morning, February 22, 2003, FFR visited Sunrise at Fair Oaks, an assisted living facility.  The feline or "sea lion"
volunteers were Shoshanna, Priska, and Sonny.  There were lots o' human volunteers - Liz, Tracy, John, Zach, Danielle, Laura and Brennen Torres, and me.

Several residents gathered in a recreation room and everyone thoroughly enjoyed holding & petting the cats.  There are a few
residents in this facility that have pets, but it appears they are

looking for a resident cat.  They tried to adopt Sonny, who sat placidly on laps until the very end, even as Shoshanna & Priska paced restlessly on their leashes.  We had to explain that Sonny was the only cat NOT up for adoption as he be

longs to John & Janet Bennett, FFR's founders.
Goldie (see photo at right) used to live on a farm and told us they used to milk the cows and squirt the milk directly into the cats' mouths!

They thanked us profusely for coming - not only for the cats, but also for the conversation.  On a personal note, my grandmother was in a convalescent home when I

was younger, and I still feel guilty that I did not visit her very often.  She passed away several years ago, and this is a small way I can attempt to make amends.   Plus I miss my granny and enjoy being around "grandmotherly" types.  It was a fun way to spend an hour on a Saturday morning - just a short amount of time can make a difference!
