Our spay/neuter programs are going strong!
We are averaging about 20 cats and dogs per week through our SNYP (Spay/Neuter Your Pet) Program. People are mostly hearing about our free spay/neuter program through word of mouth, animal shelters, pet stores, and vets. We will be reapplying for grant funding in May and hope to bring on another vet in the Rancho Cordova area at that time.

We are averaging about 18 feral cats per week through FSNP (Feral Spay/Neuter Program). We trap most of these ourselves, however several people have contacted us who are trying to trap cats themselves. We've been contacted by the Folsom Chamber of Commerce to trap the numerous feral cats on their property. They've given us access to their property at night and we consistently trap 1 to 2 cats each time we visit.
Folsom Prison continues to contact us to help with their feral cat situation. We are able to drop off humane traps for them to use. We pick up the cats once they're caught, spay/neuter them, and bring them back for release. Sometimes the prisoners are able to befriend the cats. We recently received a letter from a prisoner who had shared his cell with a cat he calls "Baby Girl". Baby Girl was friendly, so we had planned to foster her and put her through our normal adoption process, however this prisoner wrote to us explaining that he had become so attached to Baby Girl that he wants to adopt her when he is released later this year! We were so touched by his letter and definitely understand the strong bond that can form between people and their pets. A family member will be picking up Baby Girl at the end of April and keeping her until the prisoner is released.

This year's CatWalk was a huge success. Little did I know that we would actually reach the crazy goal we set last year of $5,000! This money will be used towards feral spay/neuters. Now we are being challenged to again double our goal for next year to $10,000. I'd laugh but with the great group of volunteers that Folsom Feline Rescue has, well, that would be foolish.
We are applying for more grant funding for FSNP to help continue this program throughout the year. 2004 may mark the first year when we've been able to continue both programs (SNYP and FSNP) all year long without any suspension.

Affecting the pet population through spay/neuter is a long process and takes much patience and determination. Each time we trap and alter a cat or someone's pet who couldn't otherwise afford it, I know the difference we are making in the quality of the animal's life and know that we are decreasing the suffering of unwanted litters. With each grant we're awarded and each new area we are able to assist, I know we are getting ever closer to changing how we, as a community, handle pet overpopulation. Change starts with each of us and together we are making a difference.
