And They Lived Happily Ever After

By Janet Bennett

We love to hear about the cats that we've placed for adoption.  It gives us volunteers a tremendous feeling of satisfaction knowing that they are loved and living happy, healthy lives.  We've added this new series to share these heartwarming stories with you.

I could see my daughter eyes light up when she locked her eyes upon a handsome big orange and white tabby, sitting in a chair with a leash on.  He almost posed for us with a sophisticated look about him.  We were
told this cat's name was Nolo.  He looked to me to be a cat that resembled a cat I used to watch commercials about named Morris.  Nolo sat in this chair like a movie star.  He was very handsome and Erica took a
liking to him immediately.

She asked to hold him and this cat named Nolo melted into her arms.  The staff at with Folsom Feline Rescue stood there in amazement.  They felt as though Nolo would never be adopted.

My daughter instantly knew in her heart Nolo was the new addition for us.  I, on the other hand, felt as though I fulfilled my role as a parent by letting her visit with the animals on that day, share her love, and knew I was not ready to open my heart since I was grieving.  It had only been 3 weeks since Chloe's passing and much too early for me to adopt an animal.
The next week I went into work and emptied my brief case when I cast my eyes on a  note from my daughter....  The note read as follows:

My Christmas List

1.  Nolo - I know he is not a small kitten, but he is only one year old and he acts to me like a kitten.  Just like Danny (Erica's brother) fell in love with Chloe when he first saw her, I fell in love with Nolo.   Although, do not get me wrong, I miss Chloe very much and I always will, but she is in a better place now and just like the lady we saw in the Macaroni Grill said the other night, "Every once in a while we have to move on."

I then went to visit with Nolo. I  picked him up and he laid on my lap and just looked at me.  It was a look that I will never forget.  Nolo was the pet for us!  He made me laugh.  He was friendly, yet sophisticated.  I decided to name his middle name Alexander due to his tall, proud standing.

On December 23, 2001, Erica and I went to pick our new family member up.  There he was just as handsome as when we first met him.  He was ready.  He was excited in the car and we made sure his Christmas was special too.  That Christmas, not only did my son, Danny, my daughter, Erica and I  receive a gift of love, we also shared our love, our home, and gave him a stocking of new toys, his very own cat box (that he did not have to share), his bed and yes, those great food dishes, and most importantly, a place where he could feel accepted for just the way he is - comfortable and never alone again.
