| Meet FFR Volunteer Kate Evans

Name:
Kate Evans
Occupation:
Mom of Natasha (5) and Alec (3)
Birthplace:
Michigan
About my family:
My husband Doug works at Intel in Folsom. My daughter Natasha is 5, and will be starting Kindergarten this August. My son, Alec is 3. He will spend this fall cracking me up and playing trains.
Companion animals I share my home with:
My first baby here in California was Georgie, who is now an almost 7-year-old golden retriever. She was an only pet for over 6 years, and then Natasha and I fell in love with a gray tabby cat from FFR named Tattoo. We brought him home a month ago, switched his name to Tahoe, and he is thriving. Last week, we brought home Colby, a 4 month old black kitten. We have renamed him Annie, as the kids believe he is a she. She/he is impervious to everyone else and happy as a clam. Tahoe is adjusting and Georgie is happier than ever because both of the cats will play with her.
Favorite hobbies:
Cooking new and interesting foods and reading about cooking. Bikram yoga whenever I can get myself over to the studio.
Favorite foods:
Anything spicy and vegetarian.
Favorite movies:
I'm up for anything silly and funny or totally action-oriented, but never, ever anything serious and dramatic.
Favorite way to relax:
Cooking in relative peace with a nice glass of wine.
Books I'm currently reading:
The Savory Way by Deborah Madison, and Madhur Jaffrey's New World Vegetarian.
My first job was:
Gymnastics coach
Job (besides my own) I'd most like to try:
Bikram yoga instructor.
I play the following musical instruments:
Piano
Most-extreme sport or activity I've tried:
Tried, but didn't succeed, to climb Mt. Ranier with my brothers. They had no problem, but it was way too cold for me!! I figure I made the right choice quitting because I stayed back at the lodge and had some amazing blackberry pie!
My idea of a perfect vacation:
With my family, Disney World. We could spend a month without ever wondering what to do next! By myself, I would love to go spend some time sitting in the sun with a book.
Most surprising fact about me:
Before having Natasha I went to Carnegie Mellon for an MBA and then worked in Internal Audit at the Hertz Corporation. Since then, I have become a lot more fun. :)
Secret skill or ability that few people know about me:
I can walk all over the house on my hands. It's amusing to the kids and animals.
Causes or issues that matter most to me:
I can work myself up over just about any cause that helps anything or anyone.
Current volunteer role with FFR:
I really like being with the cats and talking with the people at adoption events. I just started fostering Cupcake and Pumpkin, and I am really enjoying it. I am actually starting to understand that it is better to spend a little time with them and help them find the right home, then help some more cats. Before FFR, I would have wanted to take as many as I could for myself. I haven't had the opportunity to try much else yet, but look forward to it.
Why I decided to volunteer with FFR:
I truly was so thankful to have the opportunity to adopt Tattoo. He is such a wonderful mellow cat, and when I think of the alterative fates he could have met, I feel indebted to FFR. Also, the timing was perfect for me to find something else to do, since my oldest is about to start Kindergarten.
What I like best about volunteering with FFR:
The cats and the people who visit them at the adoption events so far.
Other community groups/activities (besides FFR) I'm involved with:
Just about every activity for young kids in town.
Advice I have for other people wanting to volunteer:
There are so many ways to contribute. If you have supplies or time, it is so incredibly satisfying to help the cats and the people who get to share their homes with them. You can make a difference by doing so little.
