Meet FFR Volunteer Shirley Brown

Name:
Shirley Brown

Occupation:
Retired from USDA

Birthplace:
Sacramento, California

About my family:
Ron, my husband of 13 years, is a musical genius. He plays tenor sax, clarinet, and keyboards. He is a composer and is working on recording his second CD. He is a skilled tennis player and has won many tournaments on the senior circuit. Can I brag on him a little more? He is the most intelligent person I have ever met! I have 2 children, Jana and Jill, from my first marriage. Jana teaches algebra at a magnet high school in Chicago. Jill teaches PE at a middle school in Roseville. I have 2 "bonus" children (from Ron's first marriage), Mike and Jenny. I have 5 grandchildren.

Companion animals I share my home with:
Two tabbies share our home. They are Ted, a black and white medium hair, and Zoë, a black and tan short hair.

Favorite hobbies:
Hiking, shopping for bargains, and dancing.

Favorite food:
Mexican food.

Favorite movies:
Chicago, Flirting with Disaster, Fargo, and Grand Canyon.

Favorite TV shows:
Ellen, Seinfeld, Friends.

Favorite way to relax:
Watch a movie.

Books I'm currently reading:
The last book I read was "Into Thin Air."

My first job was:
A stenographer for Sacramento County, Department of Public Works.

Job (besides my own) I'd most like to try:
Nanny.

Most-extreme sport or activity I've tried:
I used to fly with a pilot friend who owned a single engine, 2-seat Cessna. Now, I think, "What would we have done if something had gone wrong with that one engine?"

Country in the world I'd most like to visit, and why:
Egypt for the pyramids.

My idea of a perfect vacation:
Hiking in the mountains.

Most surprising fact about me:
As a teenager, I wanted to be an archaeologist. I spent one summer on an archaeological dig.

Secret skill or ability that few people know about me:
I am an accomplished ballroom dancer.

Causes or issues that matter most to me:
Animals!

Current volunteer role with FFR:
I am adoption event coordinator. I solicit (or harass, depending on your point of view) people to staff adoption events. I like to help with fundraisers, like CatWalk and I enjoy writing articles for Kitty Scoop.

Why I decided to volunteer with FFR:
I wanted to help the cats.

What I like best about volunteering with FFR:
I enjoy the volunteers and, of course, the kitties!.

A favorite story about my volunteer experience:
I was fostering for about 8 months. The kitties would come stay for a short time until they were adopted. John then brought over 2 tabbies for me to foster and I got attached without realizing it. I took them to an adoption event just to have their nails trimmed and adopters were interested in them. I was shaken by this interest and I put them back in the carrier and rushed home. I started making excuses to John why they couldn't go to adoptions. Finally, I had to admit my attachment. I adopted them officially at the first No More Homeless Pets Super Adoption. Friends asked me what was different about these 2 kittens. Why did I get so attached? I don't have an answer. They only thing I know is -- they aren't leaving this house!

Other community groups/activities (besides FFR) I'm involved with:
I am Board Member and newsletter editor for our Roseville neighborhood association. We are the most active neighborhood association in Roseville and we distribute 1000 newsletters each month in the Maidu neighborhood. I pick up books from a used bookstore and deliver each week to Penryn for the barn and book sales that benefit animal rescue groups. I help Fluff Buddies with transportation and with some intermittent day care of kittens. I am active in the Solemates Walking Club.

Advice I have for other people wanting to volunteer:
Don't be concerned that you don't know enough or you don't have enough experience ... just start showing up and helping, and soon you will find your niche.
