Volunteer Profile--Daphne Belshaw

By Shirley Brown

I first encountered Daphne at the Thursday Night Market working for Folsom Feline Rescue (FFR) and I was impressed.  Here was a woman who could talk to anyone.  No one is a stranger to Daphne.  She talks to one and all.

At the Thursday Night Market, Daphne is very effective at selling the See's candy bars at the FFR booth.   She enjoys talking to the passersby and they enjoy talking to her.   As a result of interaction with Daphne, people frequently make a donation or buy a candy bar.  Daphne has excellent "people skills" and individuals respond to her warmth and her humor.

In the Spring of 2003, Daphne helped staff the booth for the No More Homeless Pets coalition at the Denio's Farmer's Market.  Daphne brought articles to donate for the sale and she sold items from the booth all day long.  Daphne is perfect as these events because she is outgoing, enthusiastic, and friendly.  When the Pet Expo was held in Sacramento at Cal Expo, Daphne worked the FFR stall.

Cats are her passion.  She stops people in the grocery store and talks about cats.  She stops her car on the highway if she sees a stray and rescues it.  She has even been known to lecture people about their responsibilities to their pets and the advantages of keeping their cats indoors.

Cats show up at her door and she incorporates them into her household.  Currently, she feeds and cares for 4 cats  - - Harry, Buffy, Lucy, and Sarah.  Harry, a handsome, cream- colored stray that she found at her apartment complex, loves people.  Harry has found his niche as a LapCats volunteer, entertaining the seniors on visits to nursing homes.  He has just the right temperament.  Buffy is her Mom's 12-year old cat, part Siamese and part Tabby.  She calls Buffy the "miniature white tiger."  Lucy, age 10, is black and white.  According to Daphne, "Lucy looks like a Holstein."  Her youngest kitty is tiny, all-black Sarah who is 4 years old.  Sarah weighs all of 7 pounds.

Daphne has experience trapping feral felines and she states, "I am lucky at trapping."  She did some trapping in the State of Washington when she lived there.  She trapped ferals and found homes for them on her own.  She was not affiliated with any group.

The first rescue group that she volunteered with was the King County Humane Society in the Seattle area.  She answered telephones for them and she states that she took some "strange calls."  When she was in Pleasanton, California, she was a volunteer for Tri-Valley Animal Rescue.  She would rescue dogs and cats from the animal shelter and take them to the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA).  She ferried animals to the shelter and to the veterinary clinic.

Daphne subscribes to cat magazines and she reads a lot of cat literature because she likes to stay informed and up-to-date on cat issues.  She said, "Friends call me and ask me cat-related questions.  They ask for my advice.  I like to be a resource."  Daphne also believes that education of children is important.  She states, "I think young children are perceptive enough to understand the value of animals."

Daphne joined Folsom Feline Rescue in February of 2001.  "I wasn't there in the very beginning," she said, "but I joined the group shortly thereafter."  She said, "As a real estate agent, I have to work weekends.  Therefore, I cannot work the adoptions.  But, I do all the fundraisers that I can."  She enjoyed the Chevy's Restaurant fundraiser recently held in June.  She stated, "I thought the Chevy's fundraiser was an excellent way for the group to get together and socialize.  The volunteers had a good time and we helped raise money for the spay/neuter programs.  I
