"Silent Warriors"

This article is the second in a series that we are publishing, written by a fellow animal lover who has generously shared her stories with us. I hope you enjoy them as much as we have.

We are the Silent Warriors. Quietly driven to rescue the animals who are abandoned, forgotten, and abused. Animals have only people to help them out. If kindness does not reach out to our furry friends, they will all become extinct. Compassion is our life-blood, we seek no applause. The reward is removing an animal from terror and placing it in a loving home. Silent Warriors are everywhere. Our only enemy is the people of indifference and ignorance. Smiling as they throw a cat out of a moving vehicle; nonchalant while drowning a litter of puppies. Indifference is caustic and impossible to deal with. Thus the Silent Warriors move with hearts so big they don't mind getting out of bed at 4 a.m. to set traps across town, spending entire afternoons cleaning up litter boxes, committing to seven-day-a-week feeding of homeless cat, or dog, colonies or spending every weekend at an adoption sight.

Physically weary, mentally exhausted, determination pulls us through every obstacle. In each victory, we are encouraged and surge forward with renewed energy.

There is not always a bright light at the end of the tunnel because the needs and numbers are overwhelming. This is a brotherhood of people doing what we cannot stop from doing. Once you have lifted a tiny kitten from a trash can or pulled a starving dog from an abandoned trailer, you cannot stop.

Your life changes, so does your heart.

We journey forward, taking pride in our work.

When that momma-cat who had back-to-back litters for years on end is finally spayed and placed in a loving home; when the tortured puppy is healed and in the arms of a loving caretaker -- the reward is too great.

You cannot stop.

You continue working.
