Don't Overlook These
"Grown-Up" Kitties

By Lisa James

Everyone knows a kitten is a wonderful addition to your household, and two are even better, right?  Well, yes, unless the two grow up to be implacable enemies because one picked on the other during their entire adolescence.  (We all know some human sibling relationships like that!)

Instead, there is an even better, more rewarding alternative than two kittens.

Try adopting a kitten and a spayed female who has had a litter.  First ensure she loves kittens--and many former moms do.  This way you get to see wonderful kitten antics and mother love, plus you know you've saved the life of a hard-to-place adult cat.

Sometimes a neutered tom is Mr. Easygoing who also loves kittens.  This is another way to get hours of free entertainment, and save the life of an adult cat.

Another excellent alternative is an adult cat instead of a kitten.  With an adult cat, you don't have to train him or her not to scale the drapes - or your khaki-clad leg (Owww!), and, hopefully, ahem, not to jump on the counters.

The best alternative is two adult cats.  Owning two cats means you never have to feel guilty about leaving your house for hours on end.

Also, you will already know the personalities of the cats which prevents you from adopting that adorable, friendly kitten who sometimes grows up to be a princess who doesn't want to be held, seldom purrs, and gives cats a bad name by her haughty demeanor and finicky disposition.

We at Folsom Feline Rescue know all our adoptable cats and kittens so well, we will be able to tell you the perfect mix and match for your particular household:  "Hmm,  Sela and any kitten, Sarah and any kitten, Sal and Cal together, Einstein and Flash together, or Tiger and any kitten or cat!  Oh, my gosh, the combinations are endless!"
