The Golden Years

By  Janet Bennett

Peppy came to Folsom Feline Rescue last year along with her companion, Double Lug.  Peppy was estimated to be about 13 years old and Double Lug around 8.  They had lived together with their owner until she died and a relative brought the cats to us.

They immediately occupied our "senior ward" and made themselves right at home.  Peppy, being older, had arthritis and, as we discovered later, a kidney problem.  She is on a special diet.

Peppy, reflecting or napping? It's hard to tell.

Double Lug was able to find a home and had to part from her friend Peppy.  Since then, Peppy has become more affectionate with us, perhaps knowing that she will be living out her remaining years here.  Due to her unstable health condition, we didn't feel she should be placed in a new home.

We don't know where Peppy got her name, but it could be because her ears look like they had pepper sprinkled on them.  She loves to be petted and really enjoys a good brushing.  She stays in our den and when a desk lamp is turned on, she's quick to make a spot beneath it to lie down and get toasty.

Just like an elderly person, Peppy moves around slowly, with care.  She takes her time lying down and getting up.  Oftentimes, we catch her sort of dozing in a sitting position.  But as soon as you pet her or call her name, she comes to with a "Mrow!"  Peppy's a talker and let's you know when she's craving attention.

It's quite amazing to befriend an older cat.  I have found older cats to have wisdom and a lot of love to give.  Peppy isn't ready to say goodbye yet.  She is happy to be with us and live her golden years in peace and comfort.

Wide awake, and ready for action!
