| Meet FFR Volunteer Mike Perszyk

Name:
Michael (Mike) A. Perszyk
Occupation:
Building Maintenance
Birthplace:
Roseville, CA
Companion animals I share my home with:
The following cats (all feral, except one): Monique, Turbo, Winchester, Marcel (all related; Marcel was born in my home), Tigger, Charlie (much history, including a bad experience with county animal control and a series of rabies shots for me), Daisy (who was hanging around outside my apartment and decided to come in one day and has never tried to leave or go back outside), Gracie (who I suspect is related to the first four, as she was rescued from the same place as they were). Plus Fishie (my fish), Skyler (my cockatiel, who just landed on my head one day at work) plus foster kitten Lucy (found in the middle of the road at age 2-3 weeks by a PetsMart customer and turned in to FFR by store staff).
Favorite hobbies:
Racing my car, making my own speakers and electronics for my home entertainment system, cycling, live sound for concerts, car shows, car audio. Too many more to include, as the list is constantly changing.
Favorite food:
Mexican, steak, barbecue.
Favorite movies:
I don't go to movies much as I don't mind waiting for them to appear on TV.
Favorite TV shows:
Changes every season, but recently was Rockstar: INXS.
Favorite way to relax:
Just chill at home with no interruptions.
Books I'm currently reading:
None, but am constantly reading magazines and the newspaper.
My first job was:
Scorekeeper at a bowling alley in Modesto.
Job (besides my own) I'd most like to try:
Retirement; being Bill Gates.
Most-extreme sport or activity I've tried:
Extreme mountain biking and rock climbing; extensive experience in both.
Country in the world I'd most like to visit, and why:
All of Europe, especially the countries of my heritage (England, France, Germany, Poland, Czechoslovakia, Hungary).
My idea of a perfect vacation:
Haven't even thought about it.
Most surprising fact about me:
Supported my family and myself since starting work at age 12 after my dad passed away when I was 10.
Secret skill or ability that few people know about me:
Willing to try just about anything and will continue to attempt those things I can't do until I can do.
Causes or issues that matter most to me:
Rescuing all animals in need and helping people understand that we are encroaching on the native homes of wild animals, not vice-versa.
Current volunteer role with FFR:
Trapping, LapCats, fostering, helping with group activities.
Why I decided to volunteer with FFR:
I met John and Janet Bennett through Cats About Town, and waited to join until FFR was established and running well.
What I like best about volunteering with FFR:
The fact that we all have room in our hearts to help animals in need.
A favorite story about my volunteer experience:
Lately I've been feeding a feral colony to keep them coming to the same place so we can trap and spay/neuter all the nice kitties. They now trust me enough that some will let me touch them and rub their bellies. Converting ferals to housecats is one of my favorite but time-consuming activities.
Advice I have for other people wanting to volunteer:
Just start helping and try different things, as there is something for everyone.
