MEET FFR VOLUNTEER ROBIN SMITH

Name:
Robin Smith

Occupation:
Sr. Client Services Liaison

Birthplace:
Apple Valley, CA

About my family:
I've been with my boyfriend for 21 years. It's just us and our cats in the household.

Companion animals I share my home with:
We have four cats. Deja, an 11 year old short-haired black male who's all brawn no brain, but the sweetest, most social cat I've ever had. Then there's Frank, a 10 year old long-haired tuxedo male. Frank is shy and antisocial with strangers, but a love with us. We hadn't intended to add to our family, but my boyfriend Wayne fell in love with one of our foster kittens, so we adopted both siblings. New to our family are Orangey, an orange male tabby, and Baby Girl, a grey female tabby. Orangey is extremely friendly and lovable. Baby Girl is shy, suspicious, and lovable all at once.

Favorite hobbies:
Archery. I took a class and am now hooked. Love it!

Favorite food:
Pasta

Favorite movies:
Castaway and Monsters Inc.

Favorite TV shows:
Mythbusters and Scrubs

Favorite way to relax:
When I can afford it, I love to get a massage.

Books I'm currently reading:
Right now I'm only reading textbooks for school.

My first job was:
Cashier at A&W

Job (besides my own) I'd most like to try:
I'd love to get some writing published, and I would love to learn how to make stained glass.

I play the following musical instrument:
I used to play the violin but I don't remember how anymore. Someday I would like to take it up again.

Most-extreme sport or activity I've tried:
Surf kayaking. Not very extreme, but fun!

Country in the world I'd most like to visit, and why:
Australia, because I'd love to snorkel (or scuba if I learn how), the Great Barrier Reef.

My idea of a perfect vacation:
Alone on a remote tropical island, with a kayak, and a margarita.

Most surprising fact about me:
That I'm still in college.

Causes or issues that matter most to me:
I care about animal welfare, child welfare, and the environment.

Current volunteer role with FFR:
Adoptions, fostering, and the message line.

Why I decided to volunteer with FFR:
I ran into John with a tiny little kitten, went to ooh and ahh over it, and talked to him about fostering. The rest I don't remember, but I'm glad that I'm now volunteering.

What I like best about volunteering with FFR:
Playing with the cats. I do love the cats!

A favorite story about my volunteer experience:
I don't have a specific story, but I really enjoy getting to know the other volunteers. It's nice to meet people who share my love of animals.

Other community groups/activities I'm involved with:
I run a snack bar at work to raise money that we use to "adopt" a needy family through a wonderful charity called Christmas Promise. We buy toys, clothes, and other necessities for our adopted family, and then "Santa" delivers it all to them on Christmas Eve. It's all anonymous, and even the parents never know where it came from. It's incredibly rewarding.

Advice I have for other people wanting to volunteer:
If you love cats, you'll enjoy your volunteer experience, but if you don't try you'll never know.
