Folsom Feline Rescue Initiates Microchip Identification Program

FOLSOM, Calif., September 16, 2002 - Folsom Feline Rescue, a volunteer, non-profit, tax-exempt organization dedicated to feline rescue, announced that they have started micro-chipping their adoptable felines. The microchip, which lasts for the cat's lifetime, offers a way to identify lost pets and find owners faster.

A tiny computer chip, with an identification number programmed into it, is simply injected under the skin of the cats. It is a permanent, positive identification that cannot be lost, altered or intentionally removed.

AVID, the maker of the microchip and the scanner, supports a proprietary pet tracking database called PETtrac. When a chip is injected into the animal, the tag number is entered in the patient records at the veterinary clinic and is also recorded on a patient identification sheet that is forwarded to AVID. This information is registered in the AVID database and used to return the animal to its owner. PETtrac is a global recovery network and it is backed by Veterinary Medical Associations across the United States. More than 18,000 AVID scanners are in place in hospitals, shelters, animal control units, research labs and emergency clinics nationwide. A toll-free 800 number is provided for shelters and veterinarians to call regarding found pets with a microchip.

Local area shelters and area veterinarians have the AVID scanners and are capable of obtaining the unique and exclusive number that each chip holds.

With this new service, Folsom Feline Rescue is raising their adoption fees by $5 per animal. This includes free registration of the chip for the new owner. This is a $15 savings for the new adopter as they would have to pay more if they obtained the microchip on their own.

In addition to the microchip, all FFR cats are:
  • screened and tested for cat disease (FeLV/FIV)
  • spayed or neutered prior to adoption
  • given FVRCP and Rabies (if over 5 months) vaccinations
  • de-wormed and given flea protection
  • given any necessary medical care,
  • provided a 2-month trial of pet insurance from Shelter Care
