| PRESS RELEASE FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE December 1, 2001 Contact: Folsom Feline Rescue 916-484-4099 P.O. Box 6773 Folsom, CA, 95763 Folsom Feline Rescue Receives Funds from Grassroots Campaign 'Round UP' Campaign Raises More Than $470,000 to Help Pets FOLSOM, Calif., December 1, 2001 - Pet overpopulation is a dramatic and growing problem in the U.S. Part of the solution to the overpopulation problem lies in having pets spayed or neutered and now with money raised in the PETCO Foundation's "Round UP/Spay Today 2001" campaign, thousands of spay and neuter surgeries will be funded. During three weeks in August customers in PETCO stores across the nation were asked to "Round UP" their purchases to the next dollar, five dollars or whatever they wanted to contribute. This second nationwide "Round UP" campaign raised more than $470,000 and is one of the most successful to date for the non-profit PETCO Foundation, which was established in February 1999 by PETCO Animal Supplies, Inc. This campaign brings the total amount raised through the Foundation to more than $5.2 million. "We're thankful for the heartfelt support from PETCO customers," said Paul Jolly, the PETCO Foundation's Director. "With the help of our customers and the Foundation, we will assist over 400 local spay/neuter organizations continue their spay/neuter programs including Folsom Feline Rescue. "Remember that each animal altered means that their potential offspring (usually 4 to 6 puppies or kittens) will not grow up to have offspring of their own and continue the cycle that perpetuates pet overpopulation," Jolly added. Local proceeds from Round UP/Spay Today 2001 will be used by Folsom Feline Rescue to provide free spay and neuter procedures for those with a financial need. This program will apply to residents of Folsom, Fair Oaks, and Orangevale. "The fantastic support from the local communities and the PETCO Foundation allows Folsom Feline Rescue to really make a difference in the area of pet overpopulation. Programs exist today for no cost spay and neuter of feral cats and low cost programs for Medi-cal recipients but what about everyone else. We can now fill the spay and neuter gap by providing no cost procedures not only for Folsom residents but also those of Fair Oaks and Orangevale," said John Bennett, President of Folsom Feline Rescue. PETCO is a leading pet specialty retailer with more than 550 stores in 41 states and the District of Columbia. To find the nearest store, log on to www.petco.com. The PETCO Foundation was established in February 1999 to develop and manage fundraising campaigns in PETCO stores and support a variety of animal welfare programs. Proceeds from the campaigns go to local groups in communities in which the money was raised. Contact Folsom Feline Rescue to request an application. |
