The Story of Victor, by Shirley
Brown
Victor, a very sweet, Russian blue kitten, was rescued from a downtown
Sacramento location in the summer of 2000. He was born to a feral cat
and he would have been homeless, wild, and eventually blind if not
captured and treated. Victor had cataracts.
He was seeing only shadows at the time of rescue and he occasionally
bumped into things. He was timid and insecure. Loud, sudden noises
frightened him.
We determined after consulting with a veterinarian that Victor was
healthy (except for the cataracts) and had many years of "the good
life" ahead of him. The veterinarian was certain that surgery would
provide sight for Victor and the decision was made for him to be
treated. The only concern was raising the $1300 necessary for surgery.
Various fund-raising efforts were initiated, including candy sales,
tee-shirt sales, etc., and money started coming in for Victor's Fund, but
it wasn't enough.
After brainstorming with fellow FFR volunteers, Tracy Kirsten, Special
Events Coordinator for our group, proposed and planned a fund-raising
walk. In October, the highly successful "CatWalk 2000" was held
in
Folsom and the remaining funds were collected by enthusiastic
walker-volunteers.
Victor was then transported to the veterinarian. After his surgery and
recovery and more eye drops than he cares to remember, Victor became
active, adventurous, and playful. He was adopted out to a selected and
screened new family. Victor's new "Mom" described him as frisky
and
happy and definitely worthy of the medical attention and the money that
was spent on him.
Victor and FFR were victorious.
